Of all the repulsive habits our dogs have—drinking from the toilet, rolling in swamp muck, licking their buttocks—most owners are most disgusted by the question of why dogs eat poop. Their motivation may not be to disgust us, but it certainly does. So much so that discovering your dog eats poop is frequently cited as a reason people try to rehome a dog or even consider euthanasia.

Coprophagia (kop-ruh-fey-jee-uh) is a scientific term for this poop-eating habit, and there are both behavioral and physiological reasons why some dogs consider poop to be a delicacy. Don't give up if you have a poop eater. There are methods to discourage the habit, as well as some over-the-counter remedies. Poop eating is a relatively common phenomenon in dogs, despite the fact that science has not thoroughly investigated it — there have been few studies on it. In a 2012 study presented at the annual conference of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, researchers led by Dr. Benjamin Hart of the University of California, Davis discovered:

• One in every six dogs is classified as a "serious" dog poop eater, which means they were caught in the act five times.
• One in every four dogs in the study was observed eating poop at least once.

The study consisted of two separate surveys distributed to approximately 3,000 dog owners. While eating poop is repulsive to human sensibilities, it's not all that bad for canines. Dogs evolved as scavengers, eating whatever they could find on the ground or in the trash heap, so their conceptions of haute cuisine differ from ours. Animal behaviorist Steven R. Martin wrote the book Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training. Coprophagia, according to Lindsay, "may be one of several appetitive survival behaviors that have evolved to cope with the periodic adversity of starvation."." In other words, you can't be picky when food is scarce.".

Poop Eating in Dogs and Puppies Is Normal

Eating poop is a completely normal way of obtaining key nutrients for some species, such as rabbits. In fact, if rabbits are not allowed to do this, they will develop health problems and young rabbits will not thrive. Fortunately, dogs do not require this method of nutrition. Poop eating, on the other hand, is a normal, natural canine behavior at certain life stages.

For the first three weeks after birth, mother dogs will lick their puppies to encourage them to eliminate and clean up their poop by eating it. Puppies will naturally engage in this behavior, eating their own poop (autocoprophagia), other dogs' poop (allocoprophagia), and poop from cats and other animals. Horse manure and goose droppings are particularly appealing to some dogs. Although eating their own poop is safe, consuming poop from other animals may cause health problems if the stool contains parasites, viruses, or toxins. In most cases, this behavior will fade before the puppy reaches the age of nine months.

Facts About Poop-Eating Dogs

Coprophagia (aka poop eating) in puppies is generally regarded as a normal part of the process of exploring their surroundings. Most puppies will be content with a sniff, but a few, like human children, will want to put everything in their mouths, including poop. One bizarre fact: Soft, poorly formed stools or diarrhea are rarely eaten by dogs. They appear to be drawn primarily to hard stools. Frozen poop, in particular, is eagerly consumed! (There's a reason why dog owners coined the term "poopsicle"!).") Hart made some additional observations about why dogs eat poop in his study.:

• Coprophagia was more common in households with multiple dogs. Only 20% of dogs in single-dog households ate poop, whereas 33% of dogs in three-dog households ate poop.
• Poop eaters are no more difficult to housebreak than any other breed of dog.
• Female dogs are more likely to consume poop, while intact males are the least likely.
• 92 percent of poop eaters prefer fresh poop that is no more than one to two days old.
• Only poop from other dogs will be eaten by 85 percent of dog poop eaters.
• Greedy eaters (dogs who steal food from tables) are more likely to be poop eaters.

Why Do Dogs Eat Poop?

If your adult dog begins to eat poop, you should consult with your veterinarian to rule out any health issues.:

• Parasites
• Diets low in nutrients and calories (your veterinarian may recommend supplements)
• Malabsorption syndromes
• Diabetes, Cushing's disease, thyroid disease, and other conditions that may increase appetite
• Drugs, such as steroids

Many dogs begin to eat their own poop as a result of environmental stress or behavioral triggers, such as:

• Isolation: According to studies, dogs who are kept alone in kennels or basements are more likely to eat poop than dogs who live close to their owners.
• Restrictive confinement: Too much time spent confined in a small space can result in poop-eating. Coprophagia is not uncommon in dogs rescued from overcrowded shelters.
• Anxiety: Frequently as a result of someone using punishment or harsh methods during house training. According to this theory, dogs may eliminate and then eat their own poop to remove evidence, but they are then punished more severely. It becomes a vicious cycle.
• Attention-seeking: Dogs eat their own poop in order to elicit a reaction from their owners, which they inevitably do. So, if you notice your dog eating poop, don't freak out.
• Inappropriate association with real food: Dogs who are fed near their poop may develop a link between the odors of food and those of feces and be unable to tell the difference.
• Scenting it on their mothers:. In addition, mothers may occasionally regurgitate food laced with puppy feces. He refers to this as "appetitive inoculation," and it may cause a puppy to develop this bad habit.
• Having a sick or elderly dog: A healthy dog will occasionally consume poop from a weaker dog in the household, particularly in cases of fecal incontinence. Scientists believe this is related to the instinct to protect the pack from predators.

How to Stop Your Dog Eating Poop

With a few strategies, veterinarians and dog owners have seen improvements in dogs who eat poop, including:

• Vitamin supplementation: A long-held theory holds that dogs eat poop because they are deficient in certain nutrients, so a dog multivitamin may be beneficial. Vitamin-B deficiency, in particular, has been identified as a prime suspect, and studies have confirmed this. In 1981, researchers discovered that fecal microbial activity synthesized thiamine, a B-vitamin. Other studies discovered other nutrients that were lacking.
• Enzyme supplementation: The modern canine diet contains more carbohydrates and less meat-based proteins and fats than the canine ancestral diet. Some people have had success with canine supplements containing papain, an enzyme that aids digestion.
• Taste-aversion products:. Monosodium glutamate, chamomile, pepper-plant derivatives, yucca, garlic, and parsley are all common ingredients in many of these products. If there is a poop-eating problem in a multi-dog household, remember to treat all of the dogs! Some owners will also use a bitter-tasting spray to make poop taste worse.

Perhaps the most effective way to address the issue is through education and environmental management techniques, such as:

• Have all of the necessary supplies for feeding, training, and walking your dog.
• Keep the dog's living area, including the yard, clean so that there are no piles of poop for him to eat.
• Cat owners should keep the litter box clean or out of reach of their dogs.
• Take your dog for walks and pick up their poop as soon as possible.
• Training. Practice the cues "leave it" and "come back."."One simple exercise is to teach your dog to come to you after he has pooped for a food treat.". That way, the dog will develop the habit of looking to you for a tasty morsel rather than the revolting one on the ground.
