Unlike most breeds, the Boston Terrier has a well-documented history. Around 1865, the wealthy people of Boston's coachmen began interbreeding some of their employers' fine dogs. One of these crosses, between an English Terrier and a Bulldog, produced Hooper's Judge. He and his descendants laid the groundwork for the Boston Terrier.
By 1889, the breed had grown popular enough in Boston to warrant the formation of the American Bull Terrier Club, but the proposed name for the breed was not well received by Bull Terrier fans. Roundheads, the breed's nickname, was similarly inappropriate. Shortly after, the Boston Terrier was named after its birthplace.
By modern standards, the Boston's rise from nonexistence to AKC recognition was meteoric, as the breed was recognized by the AKC in 1893, less than 20 years after it was born. Breeders have continued to strive for greater consistency. Color and markings were not particularly important in the early years, but by the early 1900s, the breed's distinctive markings had become an essential breed feature. The charming little Boston Terrier quickly gained popularity throughout America, becoming one of the most popular breeds in the early to middle 1900s and continuing to be so today.
MABTR accepts Boston Terriers and Boston mixes of any age, gender, or physical/mental condition from 13 different states. Dogs are cared for in foster homes until they are adopted. We provide complete medical care, behavior evaluation, and microchipping prior to adoption.
MABTR is run entirely by volunteers with caring hearts, and we cannot accomplish our mission without your help. Donations from generous people like you provide us with the financial support we need to care for the hundreds of homeless Bostonians we rescue each year.
