A cat's urine should be checked regularly for the presence of crystals or stones. If these are present, the cat may need to be treated.

Urine color, consistency, and amount, as well as frequency of urination, can reveal a lot about a cat, as can any changes in their urination behaviors.Knowing how frequently cats pee will assist you in monitoring your own cat and determining whether or not you should be concerned about a potential health problem.

Dr. Jess elaborates on this topic further below:

What exactly is Urine, also known as Cat Pee?

Many names have been given to cat pee, but at the veterinary clinic, it is commonly referred to as cat urine.

In this article, I will use the terms pee and urine interchangeably.

Urine is a collection of excess water and substances that the body is no longer using.

The kidneys send excess substances to the bladder via tubes called ureters, where they collect until they are ready to be expelled from the body via the urethra as urine.

Why Do Cats Pee?

Cats pee in order to eliminate or remove the urine that has accumulated in their bladders.

So, what causes cats to accumulate urine in their bladders?

How Does Normal Cat Urine Appear?

Normal, healthy cat urine should be light yellow or clear in color, with no debris, cloudiness, or floating objects.

If your cat's urine is red, dark brown, brown, pink, or red-tinged, this could indicate that there is blood in the urine, which is definitely a medical concern that should be brought to the attention of your local vet right away.

If you are unsure, take a picture of your cat's urine and show it to your vet, as well as if your cat is peeing outside of their litter box!

This will be covered in greater depth later in this article.

How Much Do Cats Urinate?

A variety of factors can influence how much your cat urinates.

That being said, it is critical that you understand what is "normal" for your cat in terms of both frequency and amount of urination when they pee.

If you know what is normal for your pet, you will be able to recognize when something isn't right and a potential problem arises.

The majority of the water that your cat consumes is excreted in the form of urine... it has to come out somewhere.

...but how much should be released at once?

Dr. Carl A., my veterinary school urology professor, wrote one article.According to Osborne, DVM, PhD, DACVIM:

In one study, healthy adult cats produced 28 ml/kg of urine every 24 hours on average.

This equates to approximately 0.53 cups of urine per day in a 10 pound cat, or roughly half a cup.

Polyuria is defined as the production of an increased volume of urine.

Oliguria is a condition in which urine production is reduced.

When Do Cats Urinate?

Cats urinate whenever they are awake and feel the need to relieve themselves.

Some cats are good at always using the litter box or waiting until a clean one is available, while others are more picky about when and where they go.

How Often Do Cats Pee?

Normal healthy adult cats urinate between 2 and 4 times per day, but this is only an average.

Some healthy cats may urinate only once or twice a day, while others may urinate more frequently. This is simply a ballpark average.

Many factors can influence frequency, including any medications your cat is taking, medical issues such as diabetes, their water intake, diet/food types, and weather (such as how hot and humid the environment is).

If your cat's urination frequency suddenly increases, consult with your veterinarian to devise a plan of action, as this could indicate a medical problem.

Variables In Output:

Cats who drink more water or consume more water through wet food urinate more.

Some cats get liquids from their food as well.

Wet food contains a significant amount of water for your cat to consume, which helps them stay hydrated.

So, if your cat eats wet food, know that they are getting fluids from their wet food in addition to the water they drink from the water bowls.

Certain medications that your cat may be taking may cause your cat to produce more urine.

Corticosteroids are a commonly used medication that can cause your cat (and other animals!) to urinate more than usual.

Some stressed cats urinate more when they are extremely stressed, while others pee less when they are extremely stressed.

If you believe your cat is stressed, the best thing you can do is figure out why they are stressed in the first place and remove the stressor from their environment.

Any medical condition, whether acute or chronic, can have an impact on your cat's urine output.

In the following section, I'll go over some of the more common medical issues in cats that can affect their urination.
